Cabrillo (5-8) went 2-2 during the holidayweek, and continue to show big-time improvement over last year.Five of their eight losses this season are by three points or less,and players like Tylen Douglas are developing into legitimatescoring threats. Last week they beat University and Salesian, andlost to Bellflower and Claremont. Douglas had 29 points againstUniversity, 28 against Bellflower, and 19 against Claremont. Hefollowed that up with an 18 and 12 board performance againstSalesian (Ricky Schexnayder had 22 points and 5 boards). The Jagswill now remain inactive until their next Moore League contest,January 9th at Jordan.
Compton (7-6) has to be one of the moredangerous clubs with six losses in SoCal right now, but theTarbabes did get one step back in the right direction. After a61-47 loss to nationally ranked Archbishop Mitty in the TorreyPines Holiday Classic, they lost again, 68-60, to O’Dea. But in arivalry game on Thursday morning, they defeated Dominguez, 72-50.Friday morning they play La Verne Lutheran in a consolation bracketcontest.
Jordan (10-4) won the Lynwood ChristmasChallenge and, uh, it wasn’t even close. The Panthers look like alegitimate top three team and challenger to Compton and Poly, witha few upsets already in hand this year, and the Moore League’ssecond-best record. They beat King-Drew 63-34, Lynwood 75-63,Artesia 78-55, and then defeated Lynwood once again in the titlegame, 84-56. The Panthers are inactive now until January 7th, whenthey face Torrey Pines.
Lakewood (3-10) had a rough week in the VenturaTournament, as they lost a close game to Rio Mesa (53-47) in thefirst round, before coming back to beat Santa Clara, 57-47.Naaijieel Hale led the Lancers with 17 points. The Lancers thenlost to Ventura 68-41, before advancing to a consolation gameagainst Agoura High. The Lancers will play an early Moore Leaguegame against Wilson on January 4th at 6:30pm.
Millikan (2-10) had a tough post-holiday slump,which saw them lose 96-33 to Bishop Montgomery, and 76-63 to NorthTorrance. They play Paramount on January 5th.
Poly (11-1) is still in the middle of theirthree-week layoff, and won’t play again until hosting Lakewood onJanuary 13th.
Wilson (3-9) picked up a pair of losses in theEstancia Tournament, the first against a cross-town foe in St.Anthony. The Saints beat Wilson 64-63, with Alexander Nailesscoring 14 with 11 rebounds and Carl Sandford dropping 11.
St. Anthony (9-4) got that big win over theirMoore League Wilson opponent before losing 90-55 to Mission Viejoand 58-40 to Marina.
