Rev. Dr. Mark Brighton (Christ College) published an article in the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, Volume 54, entitled, “The Sicarii in Acts: A New Perspective.” He submitted a chapter, “Flavian Judea,” for A Companion to the Flavian Age of Imperial Rome published by Wiley-Blackwell. Brighton has been fulfilling the duties of interim pastor (part-time) at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Lake Forest. In his spare time, he continues running and will compete in the Surf City Marathon in February.
Dr. Stephen Duarte (Heathcare Management, Adult Degree Programs) spoke at the 18th Annual American College of Healthcare Administrators Winter Marketplace Conference in Las Vegas, NV in December 2011. The conference focuses on advancing leadership excellence in long-term care. Duarte presented on the topic: “Characteristics of Successful Organizations,” which includes his most recent research on maximizing employee contribution and the impact of various leadership styles.
Dr. Gilbert Fugitt (Student Leadership & Development) recently presented a workshop entitled, “Creating Networks” to 45 students at the MiraCosta College Emerging Leaders Institute. The presentation focused on helping students recognize the value of building personal and work-related relationships, break down barriers between on-campus or community groups, and gain the ability to “sell” or introduce themselves in a professional manner to strangers or those in positions of authority.
Dr. Herb Geisler (Music) participated in the international meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology and the Congress on Research in Dance in Philadelphia last month, with over 1000 fellow scholars. Within this organization he also met with the Education Section, the Association for Chinese Music Research, and the International Council of Ethnodoxologists (Christian scholars in the discipline). He has presented papers at these meetings for the past eight years. In recent months Geisler has been guest organist several times at Zion Lutheran Church, Anaheim; Faith Lutheran Church, Capistrano Beach; Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, Lake Forest; and Light of Christ Lutheran Church, Irvine.
Rev. Dr. David Loy (Christ College) authored a review of “The Dialectics of Secularization” by Joseph Ratzinger and Jürgen Habermas, which appeared in the Fall 2011 issue of The Concordia Journal. In addition, an article Loy wrote on the common table prayer, “Come, Lord Jesus,” was published in the June/July issue of The Lutheran Witness.
Congratulations to Dr. Buddy Mendez (Psychology), whose book, Ready, Set, Married: Twelve Christian Character Traits for a Strong and Lasting Marriage was published in fall 2011.
